The more I work with AI, the more I notice how often people mix these two words together:
Taste and craft.
They sound close.
They often appear in the same sentence.
And yes, strong designers usually need both.
But they are not the same thing.
I think the simplest way to explain it is this:
Taste decides where to go.
Craft determines how well you get there.
That difference matters a lot now.
Because AI can help us execute faster than ever.
But faster execution does not automatically mean better direction.
Taste comes first 👀
Imagine AI generates a polished onboarding flow.
The screens look clean.
The transitions are smooth.
The typography is balanced.
Nothing is obviously broken.
A designer with craft may immediately start refining it:
✖️ Adjust the spacing.
✖️ Improve the motion curve.
✖️ Rewrite the microcopy.
✖️ Handle the loading state.
But a designer with taste may pause before touching any of that and say:
“Wait… this is the wrong experience.”
↳ Maybe the flow feels too playful for a serious financial product.
↳ Maybe users do not need more delight. They need reassurance.
↳ Maybe the animation is beautiful, but it slows down a task people repeat every day.
↳ Maybe the whole onboarding flow should not exist in this form at all.
That is taste.
Taste is not the ability to polish the thing in front of you.
It is the ability to question whether this is the right thing to polish.
Craft is what makes the direction real 🛠️
Now imagine the direction is clear.
The experience should feel calmer.
The user needs reassurance before continuing.
The transition should feel subtle, not theatrical.
That is still only an intention.
↳ Craft is what turns that intention into an actual experience.
↳ Craft is choosing the right type scale.
↳ Writing the reassurance clearly.
↳ Designing the interaction states.
↳ Adjusting the rhythm and spacing.
↳ Making the motion feel natural.
↳ Handling responsiveness, errors, loading, and edge cases.
Taste says:
“This needs to feel calm.”
Craft answers:
“Okay. What does calm look like, sound like, move like, and behave like?”
Taste without craft stays trapped in your head.
Craft gives it form.
💬 Where do you personally draw the line between Taste and Craft?
👍 Strong taste, 👎weak craft
You know the work is wrong.
You can feel the hierarchy is off.
You know the interaction is too loud.
You know the user needs more confidence.
But you cannot yet make it better.
This can be frustrating.
You have the direction, but not yet the execution skills to reach it.
You can point to the destination.
You just cannot fully build the road.
👎 Weak taste, 👍strong craft
This one is more dangerous 😅
